01 January 2002: According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the year 2001 is the second warmest year in the past 142 years. Only 1998 was warmer than 2001. The global mean temperature in 2001 was about 0.42 deg C above the 1961-1990 normal. It should be noted that 9 of the 10 warmest years have occured since 1990.
